APA turned over the keys to St. Louis County for its Olivette animal shelter Friday. APA officials said they had a very busy week when preparing for the end of operations at the Olivette location. FOX 2's Mallory Thomas reports.

Abandoned and abused animals in Bryan County will soon have a new place to be treated while waiting to find their forever homes. Construction of a 4,400-square-foot animal shelter is underway and is slated to open Summer 2025 on the south end of the county. Brooke Edwards, director for animal services said the facility will be “game changing”.

On Friday, the shelter walked its last adoptable pet, a dog named Colonial, out of the building with his new owner—the final dog adoption of the day.

The application comes as the county prepares to take back operations of the shelter from the Animal Protective Association on Friday.

St. Louis County is taking back control of its animal shelter. The county’s decision to take back control of the Olivette shelter comes just two years after it signed a five-year contract with the Animal Protective Association to run it.
