Texas Department of Transportation reports a major highways are covered in snow as a winter storm slams into San Antonio bringing sleet, wintry precipitation.

Local and state road crews have prepared for the winter storm since last week. Getting enough trucks and supplies to our region to make the roads passable is a task undertaken by multiple agencies across Texas.

TxDOT says 400 crew members will assist with 24-hour operations throughout the winter event to treat and monitor roads.

NTTA and TxDOT have begun putting down a saltwater mix called "brine" on streets and major highways to help prevent ice from sticking on the roads. TxDOT treated elevated surfaces, which are known to freeze first -- especially the big interchanges in North Texas.
