However, according to reports in the Google Maps subreddit (spotted by 9to5Google), it’s an unrelated issue as it’s affecting people who have agreed to backup their timeline locally.

Launch Google Maps on your phone, tap your profile icon at the top, and then select Timeline. Tap the cloud icon. From the "Your backups" section, select a device, tap More, and then select Import.

Google deleted the Timeline data for many of its Maps users. If you had a backup enabled, you should be able to restore that data, but otherwise, it's likely lost forever.

Check Google Maps settings: Make sure Timeline is enabled and data is set to store on your device. Back up your data manually: Export your location history before the cloud storage deadline.
