Since about the second week of May, the HP support forums have been rife with complaints of OfficeJet printers bricking after they automatically installed the company’s most recent firmware update.

A mid-May firmware update is causing some HP printers to enter a blue-screen mode, with no way of resolving the issue on the user side—and no patch incoming yet from HP.

HP has long installed a security chip in its cartridges and printers. If you use knock-off cartridges, you've probably seen a warning at some point that it isn't HP-approved.
