Just west of Gila Bend, a small hill in the desert hides over 3,800 petroglyphs, some more than 1,400 years old, left behind by the Hohokam, Patayan, and early travelers of the Southwest.

The Hohokam also made plaited baskets by weaving yucca, cattail and beargrass into various shapes. Farming was the Hohokam's main enterprise. Crops included corn, squash, beans and cotton.

The ruins are in the Queen Creek delta, where scientists believe the Hohokam began settling around 700 A.D. Archeological evidence indicates they had abandoned the delta region by 1400 A.D.

The Hohokam vanished from the Valley about A.D. 1400 for reasons anthropologists like to theorize about, but no one really knows for sure. Their earliest settlements date back to roughly A.D. 700.

Unprecedented in size, Hohokam canals often extended to 16 miles or more in length. One prehistoric canal investigated in Mesa measured 15 feet deep and 45 feet wide and was rebuilt at least 13 times.
