After NASA’s marooned astronauts arrived home in a SpaceX capsule this week, the agency was quick to chart a costly and test-intensive future for the very vehicle that had left the crew trapped in space in the first place.

The last Boeing Starliner mission was extended from eight days to over nine months due to capsule issues after docking at the International Space Station.

NASA and Boeing are still working on the problems that cropped up during Starliner's first crewed flight, which launched more than nine months ago.
