Supreme Court Associate Justice Elena Kagan said Thursday that one of the major challenges facing the federal judiciary today is the possibility of government officials defying court orders.

Justice Elena Kagan, the second-longest-serving liberal on the Supreme Court, decried threats to judges, vitriolic reactions to rulings and the defiance of court orders.

In remarks before judges and lawyers in California, the justice said she believed the court had a responsibility to share its reasoning.

The 9th Circuit decision continues to prevent the Trump administration from denying birthright citizenship. The issue may go to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The appeals court ruled that President Donald Trump’s order “contradicts the plain language” of the Constitution.
