Just hours after being sworn in, Trump pardoned more than 1,500 people charged with crimes in connection to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. Trump had repeatedly vowed to pardon the rioters who stormed the Capitol that day throughout his campaign, despite some of them being convicted of assaulting a police officer.

Prominent GOP senators on Tuesday condemned President Trump’s sweeping clemency for violent Jan. 6 convicts who destroyed the Capitol and attacked police officers.

Senate Republicans failed on Wednesday to invoke cloture on a bill legislating care for infants “born alive” during attempted abortions, with the motion largely serving to get Democrats on the record as voting against a bill being framed as anti-infanticide.

Mark Kelly of Arizona, sent a letter to Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R., S.D.) saying they are willing to provide the votes for legislation to address the country’s “pressing border security and immigration needs.

The House voted 263 to 156 to approve the Laken Riley act, sending the measure to Trump for his signature. The measure would make it easier for federal immigration officials to detain and deport those without legal status who are charged with specific crimes.
