Elias Pettersson’s season has been under heavy scrutiny this year – and that continued during Vancouver Canucks GM Patrik Allvin’s media availability on Monday.

Quinn Hughes scored twice and the struggling Vancouver Canucks edged the visiting Edmonton Oilers 3-2 on Saturday. Danton Heinen added a goal and J.T. Miller contributed two assists for the Canucks (20-15-10), who came into the game with losses in six of their last seven contests.

Pettersson lacks no-trade protection this season, but his $11.6-million annual average value for the next seven years, in some ways, makes him harder to move than Miller with his $8-million cap hit. Still, Pettersson’s name has previously surfaced in recent media trade chatter.

Frankly, Pettersson’s deployment patterns on Saturday more closely matched how the Canucks have utilized J.T. Miller for much of this season.

Many did not expect the Canucks to be sellers at the deadline, but here we are. With the team not playing well and not looking close to a Stanley Cup contender, the best thing for the team to do is sell, retool for next season, and have a fresh start in 2025-26 with new and exciting players.
