By the late 1920s, DKW had become the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. Automobile production commenced in 1928. In 1932, DKW merged with Audi, Horch, and Wanderer to form Auto Union.

This led to the car business, also in 1928, and DKW would carry its two-stroke principle to the end of its automobile production. Their first model had a 584 cc two-cylinder, two-stroke engine.

Before DKW was swallowed up by Volkswagen, it offered a range of quite popular small cars, and every year we see a handful of North American-market survivors at the Carlisle Import & Kit Nationals.
