Karl Benz had been developing the Motorwagen piece by piece since the 1870s, ultimately bringing it to market in the mid-1880s.

The forefather of all Mercedes was called “Patent-Motorwagen” and was an instant hit. Its creator Karl Benz was a bicycleenthusiast, also an engineer and a machinist.
