In this story, Frank gets the idea of the skull from his son, Will, who gives him a T-shirt with the logo on it from a trip he had in Puerto Rico and says that the skull is meant to ward off evil.

So really, the skull logo had a dark motivation right from the start, hinting that killing was more than just business for Frank. There was an element of fulfillment in taking someone else's life.
