The Titans of ancient Greek mythology were the powerful forebears of the gods. When their leader, Kronos, was defeated by Zeus, their dominion over the world passed to the Olympian gods.

There were Titans in Greek mythology, elder gods whom Zeus overcame to establish his dominion, but they're not featured in the 1981 movie, and don't seem to be in the new one either.
