The future of Green Bay Correctional Institution became less clear last week after Governor Tony Evers vetoed the 2029 closing date in the new state budget.

MADISON – The state budget will move forward a plan to close the embattled Green Bay Correctional Institution by 2029, according to Republican leaders.

Bill would cut overcrowding, save money, help mentally ill. At Waupun Correctional Institution, staffing vacancies peaked at 56% in February 2024, leaving more positions open than filled.
