A total "blood moon" total lunar eclipse flushed the moon red Thursday night into Friday morning across the Western Hemisphere. The best views were from North America and South America.

The so-called "blood moon," as the moon turned a reddish-orange color, was visible for about an hour starting at 2:26 a.m. ET Friday. Peak viewing happened close to 3 a.m. ET.

During a total lunar eclipse, the Earth will be perfectly positioned between the sun and moon, blocking most of the sunlight – especially colors with shorter wavelengths like blues and violets.
