The Food and Drug Administration’s approval of Ozempic in 2021 for weight loss treatment ushered in a new era for the class of drugs called glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, or GLP-1.

Some outcomes, like reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and increased chance of nausea, were expected. But others took researchers by surprise.

Weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy have been tied in a large, national study to a drop in the risk of developing dozens of health conditions. But the semaglutide-like drugs also appear to increase the risk of many others.
