The other force at work in “Romeo and Juliet” is fate. Fate is the unseen character guiding Romeo and Juliet, that determines the tragic timing of Juliet’s awakening and Romeo’s suicide.

Yet this “Romeo and Juliet,” directed by Jamie Lloyd (“Sunset Boulevard,” “The Effect”) and running at the Duke of York’s Theater through Aug. 3, is no straightforward crowd-pleaser.
