Lucian Freud lovers rejoice. A selection of works from the never-before-seen archive of the legendary British artist has gone on view at London’s National Portrait Gallery.

Re "For Some Britons, Portrait of the Queen Is Not a Pretty Picture" (Dec. 22), about the new Lucian Freud portrait of Queen Elizabeth II: Why is anybody in the least bit surprised?

Freud appears to peer through a hole ripped in a wall. Because its composition closely resembles “ Reflection (Self-Portrait) “ (1985), it’s believed to date from the mid-1980s.

Organized in collaboration with the Royal Academy of Arts, Lucian Freud: The Self-portraits opened in London on October 27, 2019, and is on view there through January 26.
