Hundreds gathered Saturday morning at Minneapolis' Basilica of St. Mary for the private funeral of Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman, her husband Mark and their dog, Gilbert.

The shootings also left her husband, Mark, dead and a state senator and his wife seriously wounded. “Melissa Hortman will be remembered as the most consequential speaker in Minnesota history.

Millions of Minnesotans now have better lives because Melissa and Mark chose public service and politics, Gov. Tim Walz said in a eulogy.
