Augusta commissioners this week voted to opt out of the state's proposal for changing homestead exemptions so the city can craft its own version that would offer more local control. Voters statewide last November approved Amendment 1, a ballot measure to enact House Bill 581, which exempts part of a home's assessed value from property taxes.
