PS1 has the best library of jrog classics and hidden gems imo. Rivaled only maybe by the PS2! Haven't played all notable titles, but personal Top 5 in order of preference are: •Sukoden 2 •FF7 •FF9 •Suikoden 1 •Final Fantasy 8

Star Ocean: the Second Story is an amazing RPG for PS1, it's by far the best in the series. It's a fantasy/Sci-Fi RPG with an active battle system. I beat the entire game about 20 times before I even found out there's an optional dungeon after the main story.
Which of the PS1 RPGs you think hold up the best to this day?
Final Fantasy IX is probably the FF game from that era which best holds up today. And some people (myself included) tend to consider it the most solid and well-made of all the main series FF games. The character dialogue\interactions are particularly strong, with easily one of the most entertaining and likeable parties in the series history.

I mean, Final Fantasy Tactics isn't just the best SRPG on PS1 but probably one of the best SRPGs ever made. Thats why everyone says their game is like FFT. That's the obvious answer though, along with Tactics Ogre.. Vandal Hearts is one of my favorites, if you are seeking a bit more obscure titles. Also, Saiyuki: Journey West is a pretty good one.

Wild Arms 1 & 2. Stand alone titles. Very unique settings. Turn based with some of the best puzzles in the genre on the system, ear worm worthy music and themes. Avoids a lot of tropes while still being firmly a jrpg. Valkyrie Profile is a gorgeous ARPG with a kick ass story and multiple endings. One of the best looking games on the system.
