Residents, past and present of Egham Hythe in the borough of Runnymede in Surrey, share their memories of the area. From the original ‘Froggy,’ school days, dancing at the social centre, to weddings at the local church, street parties and the Scouts.

The Egham Museum tells the story of Egham, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green, Thorpe and Virginia Water from pre-history to the present day. We’ve divided these stories into six sections. The area between Egham and Staines town centres is known as Egham Hythe. North of Egham is Wraysbury, home of the British Disabled Waterski Association. South is Thorpe Park, a large theme park of rides and attractions. Also near Egham is Ascot Racecourse.

Egham and the surrounding areas of Egham Hythe, Englefield Green, Thorpe and Virginia Water can trace their beginnings as far back as the Upper Palaeolithic period, over 12,000 years ago, and have seen many changes since in landscape and communities.

Serving the communities of Egham, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green, Thorpe and Virginia Water, we explore the history of the local area from its earliest settlers in the Neolithic and Bronze Ages to the present day.

Egham Hythe, alomhg with Pooley Green and Thorpe Lea, stands in the very north-westerrn corner of Surrey, with the River Thames to the north and the border of Berkshire to the west. They are separated from the town of Egham by the M25 motorway. Across the river in Middlesex is Staines upon Thames.

The ancient former port of Egham Hythe is 5 miles south east of Egham town on the banks of the Thames. This was a Roman crossing place on the 'Devil's Highway' from Londonium to Silchester, near Basingstoke.
