The Tricolore ensign was adopted by a Decree dated 27 Pluviose of the Year II (15 February 1794) and by a Decree dated 7 March 1848.

Most appointment and rank flags of the French Navy (Marine nationale) are based on the Tricolor. Technically Admiral of France is not a rank but an honorary title granted for distinguished service, corresponding to Marshal of France in the Army.
