The Plaza Mayor (English: Town square) is a major public space in the heart of Madrid, the capital of Spain. It was once the centre of Old Madrid. [1] It was first built (1580–1619) during the reign of Philip III. Only a few blocks away is another famous plaza, the Puerta del Sol.

Today Casa de la Carnicería houses the Hotel Pestana Plaza Mayor. The equestrian statue found in the centre of the square is that of King Philip III. It was started by the Flemish sculptor Giambologna and finished by his disciple, the Italian sculptor Pietro Tacca in 1616.

The Plaza Mayor (meaning Main Square in English) is located in the heart of Madrid, near Puerta del Sol and the Royal Palace. The square is 129 meters long by 94 meters wide, surrounded by three-story buildings with porches all along the plaza.
